Facial Enhancement Acupuncture
What is Facial Enhancement Acupuncture (FEA)?
Your practitioner has been trained in Facial Enhancement Acupuncture, developed by Paul Adkins Lic.Ac, BA(Hons), FEA, 1stDan, MBAcC, MCAUK, a traditional Five Element acupuncturist based in Truro, UK. The treatment will concentrate on acupuncture points and muscles on the face in order to improve skin elasticity and overall appearance, using very fine, pre-sterilised, single-use needles.
What are the benefits of FEA?
Facial Enhancement Acupuncture may:
- Slow the signs of aging
- Improve skin tone and elasticity
- Tighten skin pores
- Eliminate fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduce puffiness in the face and around the eyes
- Reduce dark circles under the eyes
- Promote a brighter, more radiant complexion
- Improve overall health and well-being
How does it work?
The acupuncture needles stimulate the facial muscles to physically lift and tighten the skin. FEA also boosts the body’s own natural collagen production, a protein which supports skin structure, to help fill out lines and wrinkles. It also improves blood flow to and from the skin and facial muscles, to better facilitate the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and the removal of waste products.
How long is the treatment?
Depending on the individual, one treatment may last between 1 ½ to 2 hours.
What does the treatment entail?
Firstly, you will have a consultation with your practitioner so they can find out what you hope to gain from the treatment. This involves a mirror consultation, in which you can point out any areas of the face you would like to be focussed on. Your practitioner will also determine whether you have any conditions that might be considered contraindications (see below).
Next, your practitioner will ask you to lie on the couch. If it is your first appointment, your practitioner will ask you to first lay on your front and will carry out a short detox treatment, in which needles are superficially inserted into your back and taken out after a few minutes. Your practitioner will then get you to roll over onto your back and needles will be inserted into the lower legs and arms. It is advisable to wear loose clothing that can be comfortably rolled up to just above the elbows and knees, so that you do not have to get changed. However, a towel will be provided so you can cover up if this is not possible.
Your practitioner will then sit behind you and will start needling points on the skin of the head, face and neck. A point-locating device may also be used to carry out ear acupuncture. For this to work, you will be asked to just briefly hold a metal rod while this is done. The device measures differences in electrical resistance, indicating which body areas need to be targeted.
Lastly, your practitioner will work on the focus areas you pointed out during the mirror consultation. Short intradermal needles will be inserted along any prominent lines on the face to stimulate the body to produce natural collagen to fill these out.
Your practitioner will then leave you to relax with the needles in. After about 20 minutes, the needles on the face and head will be removed. Once removed, your practitioner will massage your face to enhance the effect of the acupuncture treatment. A 2% hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 serum (produced by The Ordinary) is first applied to smooth, soften and plump up the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts up to 1000 times its weight in water and the use of three molecular weights ensures moisture is delivered deep into the layers of the skin. Vitamin B5 reinforces the protective barrier function of the skin and boosts tissue growth to heal dry or damaged areas. A surface hydration formula containing natural moisturising factors (produced by The Ordinary) is then applied to further supplement the skin with amino acids, fatty acids, urea, ceramides and hyaluronic acid to ensure it is protected and well-hydrated. Gentle pressure will be applied to the needled areas of the face and head. Using circular motions, the facial muscles are freed of any tension and the skin is encouraged to release expression lines that build up over time due to repeated patterns of facial expression. Gentle, upward strokes reinforce the lifting effect produced by the treatment. Lastly, the needles will be removed from the arms and legs.
Why is body acupuncture part of the treatment?
Acupuncture points located on the body are used as part of the treatment because they have strong relaxing and pain-relieving effects. They also convey constitutional health benefits, helping bring your body back into balance and allow your beauty to radiate from the inside-out. You can read more about body acupuncture here.
When will I start to see results?
Although people do benefit from a one-off facial acupuncture treatment, the effects are cumulative, so results will really start to show after 3 or 4 treatments. For this reason, we offer treatment packages, which are designed for various lengths of treatment courses. A lot of work is done to the face during a treatment session, so the skin may need chance to settle before the full effect can be seen.
Are there any contraindications?
If you have had invasive cosmetic treatments such as microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, face lift or fillers, you will have to wait 3 months before receiving FEA. The wait is 6 months following BotoxÒtreatment, as the toxin used can still be present in the skin for several months.
Your practitioner may ask you to first seek medical advice before having FEA if you suffer from certain health conditions. These include chronic migraines, uncontrolled hypertension, haemophilia, epilepsy, diabetes, heart abnormalities (with pacemaker fitted), cancer, cold or flu virus, infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis or tuberculosis, lymphoedema or skin conditions such as cellulitis, psoriasis or eczema. The same applies if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. You will also have to let your practitioner know if you are on anti-coagulant medication such as Warfarin, or if you have any metal allergies.
What are the advantages of FEA over cosmetic surgery, Botox or anti-aging creams?
FEA is completely natural – no harsh chemicals or invasive procedures are used. The recovery time is also next to nothing, with minimal irritation. Plus, as body acupuncture is part of the treatment, it also aims to improve your overall health and well-being.
